About the Penn Quarter Neighborhood – Home of the
Shakespeare Theatre Company and the new Harman Center for the Arts Beginning with the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s move from the Folger Library
to the new Lansburgh Theatre in 1992, Penn Quarter has dramatically changed and
is now a flourishing cultural center and residential community. It is home to
some of the most prestigious office tenants in the city as well as to the Canadian
Embassy, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery,
the National Gallery of Art and the National Archives. The Hotel Monaco and Willard
InterContinental are two of more than a half-dozen hotels in the neighborhood.
There are more than 50 restaurants in Penn Quarter offering a variety of cuisines:
French bistro, nouvelle cuisine, Spanish tapas, seafood, Italian, Indian, sushi
and contemporary American. In addition to the upscale condominiums and apartment
buildings, there are five theatres, dozens of shops, boutiques, the Verizon Center
and two major cinemas to round out the neighborhood. And, beginning in October,
the Shakespeare Theatre Company opens its new Sidney Harman Hall at 610 F Street
NW, which joins the Lansburgh Theatre as part of its new Harman Center for the
Arts.
