The London Merchant
By George Lillo
Directed by Gus Heagerty
A tragedy of Shakespearean passions and surprisingly modern themes,
in a rare North American performance. When George Barnwell, a young London
apprentice, falls under the spell of the scheming Millwood, a “lady of pleasure,”
he is led first to embezzle from his master and then to a fateful familial
crossroads. Written more than 200 years before Arthur Miller’s remarkably similar Death
of a Salesman, George Lillo’s play is one of the earliest working-class
tragedies, and one of the finest examples of the form.
