Text Alive!

Text Alive! invites teachers and students in grades 9-12 from the District
of Columbia and surrounding communities in Maryland and Virginia to explore
Shakespeare's work through a series of in-school, humanities-based workshops
and an in-depth rehearsal and performance process. Over the course of a semester,
teaching artists and educators meet weekly with students to explore the plays, history
and culture of William Shakespeare's England. Professional development seminars
provide teachers with the skills necessary to lead their students throughout
this process. In the first half of the semester, students and teachers participate
in a series of in-school, humanities-based workshops, including Introduction
to Shakespeare, Shakespeare's
World, Shakespeare's Text and Page to Stage. In
the latter half of the semester, students and teachers rehearse a scene from
one of Shakespeare's plays with teaching artists and educators from the Shakespeare
Theatre Company. This comprehensive collaboration then culminates in three
successive events: students from each participating school come together to
perform the play onstage at the Shakespeare Theatre Company; students attend
a performance of the play at the Shakespeare Theatre Company and facilitators
return to the classroom to provide students the opportunity to give feedback
on the productions and the entire program. Text Alive! encourages students
to become more active and enthusiastic participants in their own education
while deepening their understanding, appreciation and connection to Shakespeare's
work.
For the 2008-2009 season,
