Ushering

Calendar Instructions
Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer usher at the Shakespeare
Theatre Company. Our ushers are our ambassadors and gracious hosts
to our audience at every performance and special event.
Usher jobs include seating, ticket-taking/tearing, coat check, and
concessions sales. Jobs are assigned by the House Manager shortly after
your arrival on your scheduled date(s). Ushers are generally assigned
duties in which they have previous experience, but duties may be assigned
based on the immediate needs of a particular audience, performance
or situation.
Information You Should Know Before Signing Up
- An active email account is a requirement to usher at the Shakespeare
Theatre Company. We send reminder emails to ushers about a week ahead
to remind them of their upcoming ushering date(s).
- Usher schedules include an evening or matinee performance for all
remaining plays in the season.
- If you wish to usher for less than all the remaining plays in the
season, you may do so by sending an email to Usher@ShakespeareTheatre.org.
Please let us know if you wish matinee or evening performances or
both. You will be put on our on-call list and contacted as needed.
- Rescheduling/Cancellations: We understand that unexpected schedule
changes do occur, and we will do our best to accommodate your scheduling
needs. If you do need to reschedule or cancel an ushering date, please
call our Box Office at 202.547.1122, option 3, during Box Office
hours. We appreciate it when you can exchange your date in advance,
giving us time to find a replacement.
- At the Theatre: Ushers' report time is 90 minutes before curtain.
This allows enough time for you to stow your personal belongings,
grab a cup of coffee, orient yourself with the lobby and theatre
spaces, and learn about the evening from the house manager. If you
arrive more than 15 minutes late, there is no guarantee you will
be able to stay and usher.
- Dress for ushers is business attire.
- Seats for ushers are always contingent upon availability. Please,
always wait for instructions from house managers as to where to sit.
We promise to make every effort to seat you. If it is impossible,
we will try to get you into another performance.
