Why support STC?
Over the past 22 years, the Shakespeare Theatre company has become the nation’s leading force in the presentation and preservation of classical theatre. Every season we offer classical plays in an accessible, skillful, imaginative, American style that still honors the playwrights’ original language and intentions.

Our core mission is to ensure the future of classical theatre in America. We pursue this important work because classical plays are as meaningful today as they were at the time they were written. Playwrights like William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, William Congreve, Lope de Vega, Thomas Middleton and others addressed timeless, enduring themes such as courage and betrayal, love and loss, honesty and trust, faith, power, conflict and leadership. Their words resonate today in our personal situations, in the conflicts we might face with our families or colleagues, in the challenges we face as a nation, and in the choices we must make—individually and collectively—in this uncertain world.

Our commitment to this legacy takes many forms. Most visibly, it takes place on stage in Sidney Harman Hall and the Lansburgh Theatre each season. This is a costly job. Producing the country’s best classical theatre is quite expensive. We regularly commission new translations and adaptations. We train directors and actors. And frankly there are not any three-actor, one-set classical plays. Cutting costs is difficult: Hamlet will always require a certain number of actors. Although we strive to run efficiently as a business, artistic integrity is always our first priority.

Our dedication to the future of classical theatre extends to building new audiences for it. We’ve pledged to make available 20,000 tickets at just $10 each for audience members under the age of 35. Each year, more than 20,000 Washington-area theatre enthusiasts enjoy a complimentary performance at our annual Free For All. And through high impact and innovative education programs such as Text Alive!, ShakesPEERS and Shakespearience, our educators touch the lives of almost 4,000 school children from D.C., Virginia and Maryland annually.
