"The wondrous possibilities inherent in the work that will fill the Harman Center for the Arts will make Washington a destination city for lovers of the performing arts." - Michael Kahn, Artistic Director

In the near future, in downtown Washington's bustling historic business district, a new cultural landmark will emerge — the 800-seat Sidney Harman Hall — that, along with the 450-seat Lansburgh Theatre, will compose the Harman Center for the Arts. The Harman Center will make available to Washingtonians and to audiences from around the world great performances in drama, music and dance. It will:

CREATE A WORLD-CLASS HOME FOR AMERICA'S PREMIER CLASSICAL THEATRE COMPANY.
At the core of the Center is the renowned Shakespeare Theatre Company, which, for nearly two decades, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence. Mounting legendary productions under the dynamic leadership of Michael Kahn, it has earned recognition as the nation's leading classical theatre company. The new Harman Center will support the Company's expansion to a national scale by broadening its mainstage offerings, attracting a greater number of the world's most esteemed actors, directors and theatre professionals, and maintaining its steadfast commitment to broad access to a wide audience.

SHOWCASE EXTRAORDINARY LOCAL,NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL PERFORMERS.
Filling a widely-recognized need for mid-sized theatre space in downtown Washington, the Harman Center's two theatres will welcome local presenters and companies as well as great ensembles and performers from around the world. The connections among arts and artists will form the foundation, and the Shakespeare Theatre Company's commitment to quality creates the standard, upon which the Harman Center's programs will be built.

SUPPORT EXPANDED PROGRAMS IN ARTS EDUCATION.
From its beginning, the Shakespeare Theatre Company has embraced arts education to strengthen community and transform learning. Such programs as Text Alive! , an in-school curriculum enrichment program, ShakesPEERS , a community-based after-school program, and SHAKESPEARIENCE, a student matinee and discussion program, have become widely recognized models for arts education. The Harman Center will support a dramatic expansion of these programs, magnifying their impact both locally and nationally. Cutting-edge technology will create distance-learning opportunities for teachers and students in the city and across the country.

CONTRIBUTE TO A VIBRANT, LIVING DOWNTOWN.
The Harman Center is a centerpiece of Washington Mayor Anthony Williams' vision of a truly vibrant downtown, one that will serve the Shakespeare Theatre Company, local performing arts groups, community programs and a growing, diverse audience for cultural events. The direct and indirect economic impact of the Harman Center on the District of Columbia is likely to exceed $375 million during its first 10 years. In recognition of the substantial impact the Center will have on the District's economy, the Mayor and a unanimous City Council have made a landmark, $20 million investment in the project. Named for the Harman family and for philanthropist, businessman and Shakespeare Theatre Trustee Dr. Sidney Harman, the Harman Center for the Arts will occupy a dynamic and important place in Washington and America's artistic landscape.
