Fellowships

"The fellowship at STC prepared me for the difficult task of being a professional actor, providing me with the perseverance, patience and diligence to have a chance in this crazy, cut-throat industry."
Nick Vienna
2006-2007 Acting Fellow

Acting Fellows
The Shakespeare Theatre Company provides a unique opportunity for early career actors to perform in our full season of plays. Acting Fellows compose the non-Equity ensemble for most or all of our mainstage plays, serve as understudies and receive training in text, voice, speech, Alexander Technique and stage combat. Acting fellows are selected from affiliated university programs (through partnerships with Vassar College, the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and University of South Carolina) as well as from yearly auditions in New York and Washington, D.C. The Acting Fellowship is geared toward early-career actors with at least a bachelor's degree or similar training in theatre.

Artistic Fellow
The artistic fellow assists the Associate Artistic Director, Resident Assistant Director, and Literary Associate on casting, script preparation, production research and other duties related to the smooth operation of the Artistic Department. While there is no directing involved in this fellowship, the Artistic fellow may be asked to assist in the rehearsal process as needed. The Artistic Fellowship is best suited for candidates with a strong interest in artistic management, dramaturgy, and classical theatre.

Directing Fellow
The directing fellow assists the creative teams of mainstage productions over the course of the season, which may include serving as a lead Assistant Director or as a Second Assistant. Duties include aiding the director with all aspects of the rehearsal and production process including but not limited to research, text analysis, recording blocking, rehearsing understudies and maintaining a production once it has opened. As a member of the theatre's resident artistic staff, the Directing Fellow facilitates communication between the theatre staff and the production team and may also have administrative responsibilities related to the operation of the Artistic Department. Candidates should have a degree in theatre, experience as an assistant director on professional productions, a working knowledge of Shakespeare and other classics, and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
