Classics in the Classroom

Classics in Classrooms

We are no longer accepting applications for Classics in the Classroom this year. Please contact Dat Ngo, Training Programs Manager, if you are interested in scheduling professional development workshops for your school.

Classics in the Classroom explores theatre instruction, integration and assessment in grades pre-k through 12 in DC-area public and charter schools by providing professional development opportunities for classroom teachers (grades pre-k through 5) and English teachers (grades 6 through 12). Teachers participate in a series of interactive, grade-level appropriate workshops over the course of the school year to explore how theatre can impact literacy, curriculum development and classroom management. Presentations, demonstrations and exercises provide teachers with an understanding of the process of making theatre from which they can develop arts-integrated curriculum that address Standards of Learning.

Teachers participate in a series of interactive, grade-level-appropriate workshops that examine how theatre can impact literacy, curriculum development and classroom management. Through hands-on workshops and attendance at theatre productions, teachers acquire a comprehensive understanding of theatre from which they can develop curricula that address Standards of Learning.

Classics in the Classroom consists of four strands that focus on the developmental and curricular needs of each grade level:

  • Creative Dramatics (Grades pre-K-2)
  • Expanding Literacy Through Performance (Grades 3-5)
  • Theatre as Discovery (Grades 6-8)
  • Great Works Alive! (Grades 9-12)

The program design has a two-year structure: year one introduces the basic tools to integrate theatre into the curriculum and year two gives teachers options to deepen and broaden their understanding of arts integration and theatre instruction.
