The SE Project
The SE Project is the Shakespeare Theatre Company's community-based, after-school
theatre program. Students in 4th through 12th grade throughout the District
of Columbia are invited to explore their world through performance and mentorship.
The SE Project offers students the resources to develop new skills and build
self-esteem and confidence through the creation and performance of classic
plays, poems and stories.
Young Company Residencies take place in after-school programs
at D.C. public and charter schools for students in grades 4 through 6. Students
meet after school with a teaching artist for 6 to 8 weeks for reading and creative
drama workshops. Each fall and spring the participants gather for a culminating
presentation for family, friends and neighbors.
The Core Company is a youth theatre group for teens ages 14 to 19 who live or attend school in the District of Columbia . This spring the Core Company will meet at the Shakespeare Theatre Company's Education Studios at 516 8th Street SE on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to study Shakespeare and rehearse scenes from Pericles. In May, they will perform a 60-minute version of the play for family, friends and neighbors. The Core Company will also tour the production to schools and community-based organizations.

Summer ShakesPEERs, a summer youth employment program in partnership
with the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, provides opportunities for
teens 14 to 19 to study and rehearse a play by Shakespeare and then perform
it for other student groups. In 2005, the teens performed a 45-minute version
of Othello for six recreation centers.
After School Partnerships provide opportunities for collaboration
with schools and community based organizations that serve students in grades
7 to 10. Students in these residencies meet with teaching artists who lead
workshops to increase students' self-awareness and academic preparedness. The
program lasts 10 to 12 weeks.
At all levels, the SE Project provides opportunities for students to explore
their creative voices, identify themselves as artists, and become a resource
to the community.
