Ushering Positions
Usher Position Descriptions
Ushers must arrive 1½ hours prior to curtain
For All Ushers:
First usher to arrive greets and admits fellow ushers at lobby
entrance
You may be asked to do one or more of the following:
- Stuffing/unstuffing programs
- Resetting coatroom
- Turning in lost and found items to House Management
- All Volunteers should be familiar with locations of restrooms, water fountains,
etc.
The lobby opens to the public 1 hour before curtain. The house opens a
half-hour prior to curtain.
All ushers go into the theatre before the show begins.
Coatroom Duties
Generally 2 volunteers are scheduled here.
Coatcheck volunteers should be in place, oriented and ready to go when the lobby opens (1 hour before curtain).
- Greeting patrons and taking coats/hats/umbrellas/briefcases for storage during the performance
- Returning above items at the end of the show
- Keeping the coatroom organized, with sufficient hangers tagged in sequential order
- Being familiar with the operation of/advising on the use of and handing out/receiving returned assistive listening devices
- Handing out large print and Braille programs
- Handing out and receiving returned lap blankets
- Helping patrons with taxis
- During intermission direct patrons with comments/complaints to House Manager
Merchandise Sales Duties
Generally 2 volunteers are scheduled here.
Merchandise Sales volunteers should be in place, oriented and ready to go when the lobby opens (1 hour before curtain).
- Being familiar with the merchandise products available for sale
- Being familiar with the sales procedures and forms, and the credit card sales equipment
- Having a sales personality as well as facility and comfort with figures and handling money
- One of the volunteers stationed here moves to help with ticket tearing about 7 minutes before curtain
- Being in place and ready to go during intermission and at the conclusion of the show.
Concessions Sales Duties
Generally 3 volunteers are scheduled here, one at the main bar, and 2 at the satellite bar (Concessions Manager works the main bar also).
Concessions Sales volunteers should be in place, oriented and ready to go when the lobby opens (1 hour before curtain).
- Being familiar with concessions items, prices and sales procedures
- Having a sales personality as well as facility and comfort with figures and handling money
- Being aware of ABC regulations and procedures in sales of alcoholic beverages (i.e. willingness to ask to see ID if necessary)
- Being in place and ready to go during intermission
Ticket Tearing Duties
Generally 2 volunteers are scheduled here, near the entrance to the theatre.
Ticket Taking volunteers should be in place, oriented and ready to go when the lobby opens (1 hour before curtain).
- Welcoming patrons
- Being familiar with the tickets and seating layout
- Tearing each patron's ticket, noting the correct date and ticket type (i.e. regular, standing room, booth, ticketplace, etc.)
- Being familiar with emergency evacuation procedures and exits
- During performance, being aware of incidents, flash photography, etc. and advising House Management of same if required.
- During intermission, being in place at entrance to the theatre, directing patrons with comments/complaints to the House Manager and ensuring that no patrons enter that house with food and beverage
Seating Duties
Generally 6-8 volunteers are scheduled here, split evenly between each side of the house, any uneven number being a floater. Two ushers will be stationed at the top of the house and the 3rd and 4th near the lower steps on each side.
Seating volunteers should be in place, oriented and ready to go when the house opens for seating (½ hour prior to curtain).
- Greeting patrons
- Handing out programs
- Showing patrons to the correct seats
- Being familiar with the tickets and seating layout
- Being familiar with emergency evacuation procedures and exits
- Advising House Management of any discrepancies and problems in seating (i.e. double seatings)
- Seating late-arriving patrons at pre-arranged seating break coordinated by House Management
- During performance, being aware of incidents, flash photography, etc. and advising House Management of same if required.
- Assisting House Management in opening and posting the doors to the house at the top of intermission and the end of the performance, ensuring that this does not happen until lights are back up at intermission and curtain call is concluded at the end of the show.
- During intermission, being in place at entrance to the theatre, directing patrons with comments/complaints to the House Manager and ensuring that no patrons enter that house with food and beverages
